Oil heating cheaper than mains gas!

Oil fired boilers now cost less to run than their mains gas equivalents.

The latest official figures by Sutherland Tables said to heat a 3-bedroom home in Great Britain using an oil condensing boiler was £793 per annum compared to £1548 for an LPG condensing boiler and £1600 for  electricity.  Mains gas comes out at £1038 per year and with the price of oil dropping since these figures were released, the annual cost of heating a home on oil will now be even less.

That means a domestic oil fired heating system costs almost 25% less than mains gas and nearly 50% less than electricity or LPG.

Have you got oil?!

In this cold weather, we are often called out to oil boiler breakdowns due to customers running out of oil.

The damage caused by running out of oil can be significant, in the best case scenario it will cause an air lock that will need to be bled and the filters will need to be changed. Often, the pump becomes damaged and needs replacing and in some cases the fuel line becomes contaminated and needs to be flushed and cleaned with a compressor pump.

It is important to check that your gauge is working and is accurate, if not, there are many of reasonable priced and easy to fit solutions, call us for more information.

Oil prices set to fall

The price of oil will continue to fall over the next two years against a backdrop of rising gas and electricity costs if current trends continue, according to new research published today.

A study commissioned by the oil heating trade body, OFTEC, and the Federation of Petroleum suppliers (FPS), has used the historical relationship between Brent crude oil and kerosene prices to predict kerosene costs in the UK and Ireland up to and including early 2017.

Figures show the average annual cost of heating a three bedroom home by gas and electricity has increased over the last three years by 34% and 27% respectively.

As the cold weather approaches there may be some improvements you can make to your existing system that can significantly improve its energy efficiency.
Regular servicing maximises the performance of your boiler and minimises the risk of breakdown. When your oil heating system is operating at peak performance, you will benefit from reduced fuel bills and save on costly call out fees. During a service, we always use combustion efficiency testing equipment to ensure we set your boiler to operate at maximum efficiency.

How to reduce your oil costs

It is essential for an oil boiler to be serviced every year as over time, soot deposits will build up and reduce the efficiency of the burner. A well maintained and regularly serviced boiler should achieve 80% to 90% combustion efficiency from its burner (this is not the same as appliance efficiency which will be up to 97%). A poorly maintained boiler may achieve between 20%-30% less than that.

If you spend £1,000 per year on oil for your boiler and we improve it’s burner efficiency by 30%, you will save £300 per year!
